Just the Right Amount of Dinosaurs

Let Us Praise Awesome Dinosaurs
If you don't go read it after a paragraph like that, there is something wrong with you.
I haven't been posting much lately, mostly because I'm caught up in a variety of longfic, none of which apparently want to limp past the three-quarters mark. So here are some fanfiction recs instead:
There's quite a dearth of good Akihiko/Minato fic - or heck, good Persona 3 fic in general. In that spirit, I point any Persona fans to Empyreal's delightful story: New Game Plus.
An extremely interesting variation on the 'what if you could do it all again' scenario, well written, and the fact that it happens to be centred on my favourite pairing for that fandom is just a bonus. ^__^ (I demand an Akihiko social link. Atlus, make it happen.)
Heaven Falling Down
Persona 4. If Nanako was the killer. Spoilers for the true ending. This was chilling, and you should read everything this author has written if you're in the P4 fandom.
Moving right along, it is no secret that time travel stories are a guilty pleasure of mine, but now I have found an author who has combined time travel and immortality and Final Fantasy VII in some sort of incredible alchemy of magnificence. These stories are meant to be crack I suspect, but they are somehow more epic than almost everything else the fandom puts out and I wind up taking them very seriously indeed.
Timeless, Ageless, Changeless
Immortalized by the alien cells within them, Cloud and Vincent are now mercenaries of time. Sent back in time to retrieve a valuable artifact, they meet up with an ancient foe not quite in the same way...
And here's another one in the same universe:
Soujourners
In a world where Materia is but a mere memory, the Planet demands an ancient war hero be brought back to neutralise an ancient war threat. Cloud has always been condoning of the Planet's wiles. Not quite so anymore, now that Sephiroth is in the picture. (in-progress, but the author has a good record for finishing stories.) This one was particularly interesting, as it's time travelling to the future, instead of the past! *gasp!*
And this one as well, which is actually my favourite:
When You Wish Upon A Materia
Cloud summons Leviathan, and the critter refuses to go away. The only solution may be to go back in time, so Cloud is understandably concerned. It's like they always say: Be careful what you wish for!
The best part is, the stories are mostly gen! ('Mostly' in that if you wear slash goggles, you can imagine whatever pairings you want). Here's the author's website, too (the chapters are a little further ahead on there, but you might not enjoy reading in center-justification).
The best thing about the Final Fantasy fandom is the sheer multitude of really well-written time travel fics in it. Here's another one of the standouts:
Almost Karma
It ticks all the usual boxes (Sephiroth/Cloud, along with some Reno/Cloud, extremely yaoi so be warned) but is just very well written, with a couple of brilliant lines reused throughout for great effect. I wouldn't think a story in which Sephiroth watches CSI could possibly be good, but there you go, they made it work. (Also in-progress)
Braved the minefield of Death Note fanfiction on ff.net the other day, and came away with this interesting longfic:
Genius Is A Curse
If Light had never touched the Death Note, would he ever have found an escape from the depression and boredom that plagued him? Would he have had a future at all?
So there's some fun reading, if you happen to be in any of those fandoms.
(But if I'm being honest, most of these recs are simply an excuse to Let Us Praise Awesome Dinosaurs.) *___*

Date: 2009-07-22 11:48 am (UTC)I have indeed been reading Redivivus! But since that one hasn't been updated in six months, I assumed it abandoned and chose to rec Genius instead. :( I hadn't thought to haunt the author's page though! There goes the rest of my evening... <3

My favorite DN fic is currently Reigning on Heaven, I zoned out on reading Genius is a Curse about 4 times but I finally read it a few months ago and it's pretty awesome too. I just love when Light interacts with the Whammy kids I guess, almost as much as I love timetravel fics
