What with having a fancy masterlist now, the usual Fic Year In Review probably doesn't have much the same point, but I'm a creature of habit.  So here it is!

January

The Fifth Act!  Continuing on from 2009.  Can you believe it's been that long?  The thing about longfic is it always feels like you only just finished them a month or so ago.

The Fifth Act (cont)

February

I must have lost some steam and switched to weekly updates in Feb.  Bi-weekly updates are kinda insane as it is, I can't understand how I used to update daily on some fics.

March

Unsurprisingly, March was more Fifth Act.

What on earth was I doing in April?  I blame FFXIII.

May

And in May, finally finished The Fifth Act!  \o/  Wow, five months of fic right there.

Chapter 38 + Epilogue

Even though I have in the past been trying to get better at short stories and brevity in general, I still enjoy longfic the best.  I love the slow and steady build up and gathering up all the loose threads you've been laying down throughout the story.  I like finishing things that have been on the boil for weeks or months.  The Fifth Act really was just one big adventure in self-indulgence and definitely had some room for improvement, but I think I improved a lot with it compared to some previous longfic ventures.

June

:O  No fic in June!  Post-longfic holiday I guess to refresh the mental palate.

July

Dear Kunsel
FFVII, gen. After Avalanche tries to blow up the Sector 5 Reactor, Cloud starts getting messages from a mysteriously well-informed stranger on his PHS.

This was a story I came up while working on The Fifth Act and my spontaneous fondness for the most unsung of minor characters in FFVII, Kunsel.  It's kind of a letter/e-mail fic, which I normally abhor, but unfortunately suited Kunsel perfectly.  I had a lot of problems with the pacing on this one, probably because of the unfamiliar format, and while I'm not satisfied with it, it holds a special place in my heart as all the experimental fics do.

August

August was lost to moving house and Manifest!

November

OH THANK GOODNESS.  I posted the first batch of Xmas Drabbles 2010 in November!

XmasDrabbles2010 Part 1
Featuring Natsume Yuujinchou, Eyeshield21, Harry Potter, Kuroshitsuji/Tenipuri AU, and FFVII Act V AU.  I was originally sure my flist was staunchly either Tenipuri or FFVII with a smattering of crossover between, but you guys sure showed me!  :|  MORE RULES NEXT YEAR  Mixed bag, I wasn't really happy with the job I did on the Kuroshitsuji/Tenipuri AU one, and the Eyeshield21 one felt sort of lazy and not really mine, fun though it was.

December

Of course, more Xmas Drabbles, which probably contained enough words all up to make up for the past few months of posting wasteland.  Seriously, there's 20,000 words in these things so far.

XmasDrabbles2010 Part 2
Featuring The World Ends With You, Tenipuri, FFVII... and most of them sequels to existing fics.  I am left wondering if maybe I should relax my 'no sequels' policy, but it just seems lazy after a while, and did I mention I like finishing things?  I am a selfish writer.  Was pretty happy with most of these, though secretly the FFVIIActV AU one is my absolute favourite and something I've wanted to write for a while.

XmasDrabbles2010 Part 3
Featuring FFX-2, Rurouni Kenshin, Eyeshield 21, Full Metal Alchemist and Hikaru no Go.  This was an interesting set - I'd never actually read any FFX-2 fic, but it turned out better than I thought it would (though this is from the eyes of someone who probably doesn't know the fandom well enough to make the judgement).  Revisiting RuroKen was both interesting and horrifying as those were some of the first fanfics I ever wrote.  It's kind of nice to see the improvement, but horrifically embarrassing that they were put on the net at all.  FMA was another brand-new-fandom-writing experience.  I had fun with the idea for the Hikaru no Go one but definitely dropped the ball on execution.  The importance of the editing process has been subsequently reinforced.

....And that's it!  Part 4 of the XmasDrabbles will likely be out either tomorrow or Sunday depending on how long this Summer cold lingers.

Well, that was the most boring and unvaried Fic Year In Review ever!

Total Year's Output: Roughly 110,000 words. Down again from last year, though this count is only posted fic which is some comfort.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Less, but I did do a lot more original work, and there was also a fair bit of fic work that didn't (and probably won't) get posted.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2008?
Almost anything of surprise came in the Xmas Drabbles which have become way too big I need to learn how to keep those shorter.  For example, I never ever ever thought I would wind up writing Harry Potter fic, much less Harry/Draco which isn't even a ship of mine.

What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.
There's not much to choose from!  It would have to be The Fifth Act.  Even though there are a lot of things I wish I did differently and could have done better, I still think it's one of my best efforts yet.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
In terms of fanfic, there's one half done longish fic I want to finish soon, as well as the usual demanding plot bunnies.

Um, this is normally the point where I ask you guys for some concrit, but given that half the year was dedicated to one fic, asking about the best and worst has little point.  Bring on 2011!  \o/
