sinnatious: (Mwahahaaa)
This post is for my fellow Aussies!  I don't know how many Australians read this journal (There are at least three?), but if you are both Australian and on the internet you probably know about the Government's poorly-conceived internet filter by now.  Which to any reasonable mind is a huge waste of money that won't actually stop people accessing illegal websites and 'unwanted content' and will ultimately slow down the country's already slow and expensive internet.  Never mind that the vast majority of professionals have pointed out its lack of feasibility, or that the people involved in drafting this haven't even bothered defining what 'unwanted content' is.  The popular joke at the moment is that they're going to block the websites for foreign airlines so that everyone has to fly QANTAS.

I think the slow march to becoming a Nanny state has gone on far enough.  The Howard government's voluntary internet filter failed so Rudd's government is going to try and impose a mandatory one?  And despite Senator Conroy's insistence that it's only going to block websites that would be illegal anyway, I think we've all seen how this slippery slope works before.

I would rant on the internet filter a bit more, but there are already a lot of people on the net who have done so in far more detail and much more eloquently than I could.  The upshot of this post is - I'm doing my tiny part in getting the word out about the nationwide protests happening in all of the capital cities this Saturday.

Here's the details )
And also websites with more information about it:
  • Federal Govt site
  • GetUp
  • Stop the Clean Feed

Even if you can't come to the protests, tell your friends!  The more people the better.  Let's make this thing the top story on the National News.

And remember - those who trade freedom for security deserve neither.  We shouldn't let it get to that point.

    /steps off soap box.
