Supanova Brisbane 2012
Nov. 11th, 2012 07:59 pmTenth Anniversary of Brisnova this year.
I remember going to the very first one. I've been to ten of these now! (And have been saying that this one will be the last one for at least six of those.) /feels old
I dressed up as the traveller from Journey!

Back shot, which was really the most interesting shot even though everybody took pictures from the front.

Front shot!
Wasn't 100% happy with the costume, really, mostly because of the hood and the misjudged side of the pattern on the cloak, and the fraying on the yellow parts also got really bad, but it seemed to be a hit regardless. I got stopped a lot for photos - especially by parents wanting their kids to pose for pics, which made me wonder how many of them even knew what it was. (Also since when were there that many kids at Supanova?!) Lots of people recognised Journey though! Happy to know so many people have played the game!
It was also super-noisy though, which also sadly ruined my chirps! I had a speaker hidden under my cloak hooked up to a soundboard, and even though I tapped away at it there was so much background noise nobody noticed! Just couldn't get enough volume out of a little portable speaker to compete with the general cacophony. So sad. :(

I had no ideas what these guys were doing, incidentally. I thought the hat thing was them fixing the pointy bits on the hood.
The weather was absolutely pants! The only good thing was that it was fairly cool, which made my costume a little bit more comfortable. But it was raining the whole time, and the cloudy overcast weather meant that the scarf wasn't very reflective, and not to mention the wet ground was not very good for my feet at all since they were covered in fabric! It held together okay, just looked a little dodgy and was a bit uncomfortable. :/
Friend I was with tookmost all of the photos, only managed to snag a tiny fraction of the cosplays rolling around sadly. There did seem to be fewer than average though, possibly because the rain had driven them into hiding.

Halo fans are back out in force!

The Jedi in the middle has made an appearance at the past couple of Supanovas, but it's the first time in a while since I've seen Evangelion cosplayers!

This picture is terrifying in so many different ways.

Not too shabby a Loki! One of the better Avengers-related costumes shambling around.

So shiny!

Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland!

Megamind! Complete with minion! And lol, wearing a shower cap over the enormous cranium. To protect it from the rain or just part of the costume?! I couldn't even tell.

This was a fine bit of opportunistic costume enhancement. XD He bought the little alien in the trader's hall.

There were heaps of Assassin's Creed cosplayers, but they were typically elusive. I like the arm guard on this one though!

Tali from Mass Effect! That must have been an insane amount of work.

Gambit and Rogue, comic-book versions! Totally awesome.

I came so close to buying the whole Ctrl Alt Del set - although the watermelon cube was super-tempting too! I was saved only by a shortage of cash in my wallet! A wise strategy! I'd brought only enough to buy a book for Trudi Canavan to sign.
Speaking of which, that was one of the big highlights of the con for me! Got to meet Trudi Canavan! She was truly awesome. I took the opportunity to actually buy my own copy of the first book of the Black Magician Trilogy, and Dymocks then loaded me up with free books just because that's something they do at Supanova apparently. Bought one book, walked away with five. (One of them is an honest-to-goodness choose-your-own-adventure, I thought that genre was dead! Looking forward to paging through that one.) Anyway, that wasn't my point, my point was that Trudi Canavan was very nice and also shared all sorts of interesting info on her next book, which isn't coming out until 2014, which I was totally okay with (since it's a new series and all) until she started talking about world-hopping and magic and basically scratching all these terribly neglected fantasy itches of mine and now 2014 seems really far away guys. Still, it was super-exciting to meet her! It's weird but when I think about it the highlights of the past couple of Supanovas have been authors for me! They've been getting in some fairly A-list sci-fi and fantasy authors as guests!

This one had me super-excited until I realised that you could just outright buy replica portal guns now. That was another thing I was really tempted to spend all of my money on. Portal guns, guys!

Tim Burton Catwoman!

This picture is awesome on so many levels. I mean, intitially I was just like 'haha, brilliant, it's the Fifth Angel Ramiel from Evangelion!' then it's like, wait, is that a Borg? And Clark Kent talking to Wonder Woman in the background? And a Pikachu? Really, this just summarises Supanova in a nutshell.

Minecraft!

This one just blew my mind. So awesome! Best one I saw outside of the National Championships. Which were also awesome by the way! The winners were the Twilight Princess team, with puppet!Zelda and RupeeArmor!Link. I may have geeked out in a pretty big way. Their skit was also far and away the best! Although I did really like the Noh-theatre style one before them and Ultimecia after as well. Ultimecia in particular sent some shivers down my spine. Sadly our seats were rubbish so couldn't really get any decent photos. :( They'll all be online here anyway in a couple of days.
(Side note, though, guys, at cosplay skits in general - your battle skits, they're almost all missing one super-vital ingredient - sound effects! Doesn't even matter if it's out of time, late/early sound effects are better than no sound effects! Sound effects are 80% of all battle scenes. Case in point - Bleach musical. Or Prince of Tennis musical, even! You can mime all sorts of stuff with sound effects, and it will make even clumsy stuff seem real. Just throwing that out there /disgruntled sound designer being pickyeven though she has no room to speak since she's never even gone on stage.) Sound effects are like makeup for movement, is what I'm saying, and can cover all sorts of stuff.
All in all, it was a fun Supanova, despite the absolutely rubbish weather. First time it's ever rained at Supa! (At least, for more than ten minutes.) Just my luck!
