Brisbane was so lucky as to get a second Supanova in 2011!  As next year it's moving permanently to November and the April one is moving to the Gold Coast.

I don't normally cosplay at the local con, as the people I usually go with aren't particularly into cosplay (and there's way too many people from work I risk running across).  But they weren't interested in coming to this one (or had moved overseas by this point), so cosplay was on.  Because frankly, without cosplay, Supanova is the most boring con.  There were some cool guests, but those were all rather wasted on me.

Went as Kunsel from FFVII: Crisis Core on the Saturday!

This pic was way off-centre so it's a cropped version hiding all my dirty laundry.  Ahaha, and the waist-guard/binding made me look fat.  And my arms are so weenie!  That's why I'm only Second Class. But I spent exactly no money on the costume, so under those circumstances...

About half a dozen people recognised it as Kunsel though, which is frankly about half a dozen more than I was expecting!  <3 There are other Kunsel fans in the world!  High-fives were had.  There were another dozen more who pegged me as a 'generic SOLDIER', which is actually still pretty accurate.  Nobody guessed Luxiere.  Poor Luxiere.  XD

The weather on the Saturday turned out to be fairly cool!  That was a lucky break, considering it had been unpleasantly warm earlier in the week, though I kind of regret not re-using Celty now.  Oh well, hindsight is 20/20!

Anyhow, on to more pictures!  Speaking of hindsight, I couldn't see anything on Saturday, given I was pretty much limited to extreme peripheral vision and whatever was directly in front of my feet.  The SOLDIER helmets really are impractical!  So I caught only a tiny fraction of the awesome cosplay wandering around the con, but here's what I did get:

D'awwww.  This is not what's actually happening, but I like to pretend this is kind FF:Agito characters helping the poor lost Rikkaluma.

Batman and Green Lantern (perhaps the source of the mysterious green light infecting all of my photos?!).  Batman doing some hardcore sweating apparently, but since he's Batman, he has to be stoic about it. :|

Gumby, because why the hell not?

Kuroshitsuji.  Caught in the middle of a smoke break.

Somebody has stacked this deck with Jokers!

Tim Burton's Catwoman is still the best Catwoman.

Where the Wild Things Are!

Yoite from Nabari no Ou!  What on earth happened to that series?  The fandom burned so brightly then promptly fell over dead.

Giant Chomp-Chomp.  Complete with giant chain, which you unfortunately can't see in this picture.  Epic.

At this point I had grown a bit tired of wandering around bumping into things and went to check out the Madman Theatre for some Angel Beats and Tiger & Bunny (so what if I've already seen it?).  Then wandered back to the Trader's Hall to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] silverharmony.

Where I found a Selphie from FFVIII!  I geeked out a little bit.

And a Shana from Shakugan no Shana, too!  No idea how she managed to slip that sword beneath the con volunteers' notice.  Nice work, as expected of a Flame Haze.

At this point I tagged along with [livejournal.com profile] silverharmony's group of friends to the Madman National Cosplay Championships.  There was a crazy line, which we magically bypassed to the underground staging area which was apparently the secret epic cosplayer hangout.  XD  I was a shameless photo opportunist.

No idea what this is from, but awesome.  Probably not the most flattering photo I could have taken though, mid-blink, oops.

[livejournal.com profile] silverharmony's Digimon cosplay!  It was an awesome cosplay, and it was also awesome to get the chance to actually hang out properly!  XD  Thanks for letting me latch onto you and your crew.  Hope Brisbane treated you well, was totally chuffed someone finally came to Brisbane! \o/

Epic dying Gabranth from FFXII!  This was Wakaleo, aka Kenny, one of the finalists.  The full list of finalists is here.  They are all insanely awesome and god-level.

Um, also, my apologies to all the cosplay comp people for the photo harassment when they'd probably all retreated back there to prepare in peace without being bothered!  Did not belong!

That said, omg, incredible Aeon from Castlevania.

Onto the comp itself!  Um, this is kind of embarrassing, but since we were downstairs with all of the supporters and finalists, we got to enter through the back entrance and sit in the VIP section, second row back, directly behind the judges.  *coughs*  All without having to stand in line. It felt very illegal, but wow, awesome seats!  Haha, thanks Harmony, you are well-connected!

First entrant!  Actually, that is not accurate, this is the first entrant's props.  The banners changed mid-skit, and that massive armoured brute?  Giant puppet.  How did she even get them there?

Yeah.  This is what the National Championships are like.

The whole set up was pretty cool, actually.  John Robertson (the MC, comedian) would give a spiel, they played a short video about each entrant while they set up, did their skit, posed, John would ask a bunch of questions, more poses, then there'd be a trailer or something for an ad break, then the judges' thoughts!  (Not always in that order, but close enough.)

Desert Rose's final form.  The reveal part of the skit was very emotive and elicited quite the gasp of a reaction.

Gabranth again, with helmet this time!  I unfortunately didn't manage to get a good shot of his swords, but how awesome is that?!

Best part?  For his skit, he cosplayed Basch on video!  XD  They're twins, after all!

These two were the eventual winners of the championship!  From Perth, they did Okami.  The Amaterasu puppet was amazing, it was almost like a real wolf, not only was the craftsmanship excellent but the puppeteering awesome as well!  John was petting he and she had the tail wagging and leaning into the scratching just like a dog!  Adorable!

And their skit.  Wow, their skit.  You know you see staged fights in cosplay comps and they kind of look a bit awkward?  This was nothing like that at all.  So much twirling!  XD  Amaterasu fought with two lanterns on a rope, Waka fought with a light sword that changed colour whenever swinging it.  They used an accelerometer!  Fancy.  It looked incredible.  I desperately want to find a youtube recording of their performance, but none seem to be up yet.  :(

I missed getting a decent photo of Miss Ollie's and Giorgia's, but check out Castlevania duo, Matt and Jeremy!

They had a destructible set, that also made for a pretty cool skit.  (Alucard transforming mid-skit, adding those wings and a good deal of badaasery.) In addition to looking like they should be photographed from a high angle and put on the cover of a Jpop album.

Once the national championships ended, I realised that I had at some point lost a glove, had not yet eaten that day, and so decided to wander home.

On the somewhat wandering path to the exit, though, I came across these:

Captain Falcon!

What?  I... how?!

XD  And toy soldiers!  \o/  Pretty clever idea!

So that was Saturday.

Despite being exhausted, proceeded not to sleep that night either.  I think I have developed insomnia again.  So got an early start on Sunday!

I had actually planned on just re-using a cosplay for Sunday, since I really didn't want to spend any money, but could not resist this once I remembered I had an appropriate wig:

(Actually just wanted to include this picture mostly because I was so pleased with how it turned out despite being made with a leftover bit of scrap fabric and a paint pen but it really doesn't show up in any photos)

I went as Mitsuru Kirijo from Persona 3.

Not the most accurate ever (could not bring myself to mod the shirt, since it's one of the few proper dress shirts I own and may need it for job interviews!), but considering the circumstances turned out better than I expected.  I broke my 'no-spending-any-money' rule very slightly on this cosplay by purchasing the required coloured contacts (fortunately pretty cheap due to a Halloween sale).  I could also hear my optometrist's disapproving voice in the back of my head all day.  XD Oh well!

Sunday actually started out a bit of a disaster all around, so it was a good thing I woke up early.  I lost my wig cap for one, couldn't find my nail polish either, and when the time came to put on fake eyelashes realised that the eyelash glue tube had somehow completely dried out despite having never been opened, so had to try and make do just with mascara and eye-liner instead.  I am pretty fail when it comes to makeup so this was daunting.  And the less said about the skirt the better.

Arrived at the con fairly early and went for a wander around the trader's hall.  Still couldn't see much, what with lack of glasses and and hair covering half of my face, but it was easier to browse than on Saturday.  Still surprisingly busy, though!  Almost as busy as Saturday!

Somehow managed to resist the cheap games at Gametraders, and the imported DVDs at Neo-Tokyo, and the manga at King's Comics, and the OSTs at Transreality... :E  Yeah, it was basically torturing myself.  This is maybe the first time I've gone to a con and not bought a soundtrack from Transreality!  Because I already own them all.

And stumbled across a not-too-shabby movie-version Wolverine!

And met this cool pair of Sailor Moon cosplayers!  Good choices, my two favourite inner senshi!  Jupiter also recognised Mitsuru which totally made my day.

A little while after this I ran into a Naruto Akatsuki cosplayer who was also a fellow Persona fan and we geeked out about the anime for a little while.  Apparently he's planning to do Nyx and Izanagi next year, how epic is that?  And is planning Yosuke as well.  Anyhow I'm feeling kind of bad about that because he asked me to add him on Facebook but I can't actually remember his name.  (Pratt?  Razael? idk.  I think he was from Sydney or something since he kept talking about Sydnova.)  On that note, surprising how many people I saw who I recognised from cons in other cities, actually.

Chewbacca.  Because there's always someone stupid enough to not only wear a full body suit in Summer, but to wear a full body suit made of fur.

TIGER!  XD  This guy was hilarious and awesome.  Nice bunny ears, sir.

Lightning from FFXIII!

This was awesome Lord of the Rings cosplay!  Unfortunately very hard to get a photo of because they kept disappearing back behind the booths (presumably difficult to move around) and whenever they did emerge traffic stopped and a protective layer of photographers formed.  Now that's armour!

Yoko from Gurren Lagaan!  Dressed for the weather.

At some point around here, wandered back off to the anime theatre to see what was playing, then hooked up with [livejournal.com profile] silverharmony again to wander the trader's hall once more.  Sorry for dragging you along while I randomly chased photos Harmony!  And after all that, I realised we never got around to MySpace photoing!  D:

Hobo'd in on other person's photo here.  XD

THIS SKULL KID.  OMG.

XD  Ezio and Alistair discuss the finer points of perching on walls.

No idea what the costumes are, but incredible!

RAN INTO A SOUJI FROM PERSONA 4!  Ahaha kind of awkwardly appropriate given current fic. This guy was awesome, he had actual Arcana cards with him!  I also ran into him again later with a Pyro Jack prop, guys!  It was amazing!  I am still kicking myself for not getting a photo of that, hopefully there are some floating around the net.  Was so psyched to come across another Persona cosplayer.

Hahaha totally random crossover time.  FFVII/Kuroshitsuji?  Why not.

Min and Jen doing Tiger and Bunny!  Was so psyched about this.  Note the shoes!  (Also, Kotetsu supporting rival brands, Karina would be so devasted.) XD

Gabranth and Vaan!  Vaan was Will, one of the cosplay championship judges and last year's champ.  I think he was also the guy who did that crazy Snow cosplay last year with the Shivacycle?  I am also pretty sure I've seen him do Tidus as well.

I couldn't decide between these pictures so here are all of them.  These guys are hilarious.

Actual proper one this time.  You don't realise how crazy complex Vaan's costume actually is until you see someone cosplay it!

Anyhow, at this point in tagging along with [livejournal.com profile] silverharmony we somehow wound up hanging out with all the epic cosplayers again, which was a lot of fun.

Shantotto!   Now there is a character I never expected to see cosplayed, and certainly not so well!  Had the 'ohohoho' laugh down pat too.  XD

Borderlands.  Note the cell-shaded clothing.

The Flash and Boy Wonder!  (And Link, on his way to do some questing.)

Min and Jen returned later having changed into slightly less casual Tiger and Bunny regalia!  Not the best photo, but wow.  So perfectly accurate!  Should emphasise I do not really know these people, I just enjoyed being a hanger-on.  XD

Anyhow, at this point the primary activity at Supanova had become sitting around, and my feet were starting to hurt and eyes starting to itch something fierce so headed off.

One last photo for the road:

Wolverine and Deadpool!  No pop culture con is complete without a Deadpool.

So that's Supanova November 2011!  That's four cons in one year, how did that happen?
